It was a great first week meeting new little artists in class. I was able to learn quite a few names already. I have been slowly organizing and setting up the room.
A visual cue to explain what I am looking for when BEST effort is used in art class. The students were exceptional at pointing out which "craftsmanship" showed best efforts and why. Some explainations were: "no rushing," and "coloring inside lines," and "finishing coloring."
I set up a wall with some important basic elements of design to use as a reference (and add some color too)!
For the first few classes I have been doing a name design to help me place names and faces, as well as a lesson centered around Tomie dePaola. A well-known artist and illustrator, we read Tomie's The Art Lesson. The story speaks about going to school and having art class with "rules." Tomie's new art teacher helps him understand the importance of following "the rules" while encouraging his imagination and own ideas - as a budding artist. After we read the story and talked about it - I had the students draw me a picture of their most favorite thing to draw. It was all about their own ideas - whether it was a landscape, a horse, a design with color/pattern, stars, their family, etc.. We used colored pencils for this project and talked about using them appropriately.
Here are some examples of the beautiful masterpieces!
